Days afterNipsey Hussle‘smurder in Los Angeles, a city councilman announced that an intersection in the city would be named after the late rapper and activist.
According to theLos Angeles Times, Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced on Tuesday that the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue in South L.A. will be named Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom Square.
The intersection is near Hussle’s store, the Marathon Clothing Company, where he was shot. According toThe Shade Room, the announcement came after an online petition was started to rename the intersection in Hussle’s honor. The petition had almost 500,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

“Ermias Asghedom, known as ‘Nipsey Hussle,’ was an icon and West Coast hero,” Harris-Dawson said in a statement, according to theL.A. Times. “Nipsey’s genuine nature allowed him to be a light to everyone he interacted with, from family, friends, fans and his larger community.”
“As a father, brother and son, Nipsey was a rock helping to build an empire that will continue through generations. Nipsey will always be remembered for delivering a pure, authentic Los Angeles sound; his numerous philanthropic efforts; his innovative, community-focused business mindset; and his humble heart.”
Harris-Dawson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
TheL.A. Timesreported that Harris-Dawson and Hussle worked together on the Destination Crenshaw project, an art and culture initiative that aims to “celebrate black Los Angeles.”
On Thursday, he entered a plea of not guilty in court. Holder could face a maximum sentence of life in state prison if convicted.

Holder has hired attorney Chris Darden, who famously was part of the prosecution team in O.J. Simpson’s murder trial,according toCBSLA.
In the time since his death, Hussle’s loved ones have spoken out about the tragic loss of the rapper and activist.
“[He was] somebody that believed in the process of hard work, determination and just the positivity of somebody staying in the area that he grew up in and making something out of nothing,” his brotherSamiel Asghedomtold ABC News.
“He was a role model to the community, to the kids, and to the mothers and the grandmothers and the community that watched him grow up and seen him as a youngster, a family man, a father, raising his kids,” he added.
The rapper’s girlfriendLauren Londonpaid tribute to her boyfriend of five years on Instagram last week, sharing a slideshow of photos of them together with their family.
“I am completely lost,” London wrote. “I’ve lost my best friend, my sanctuary, my protector, my soul.”
“We are lost without you babe — I have no words.”
