I ’m trusted you all remember the centre - wrenching first season of episode of Heroes where Hiro realized that , even though he could travel back in time , he still could n’t prevent the death of his girl Charlie , because somethings are just destined to happen . You cried , I exclaim and we all missed the real lesson of the sequence : Hiro is a moron . After all , if there ’s one affair that Heroes is in reality about , it ’s messing about in clock time to furbish up whatever problem is affecting next New York that particular calendar week . Join us as we calculate at what ’s to come – and what was to come , before other things started to come instead – in NBC ’s superhero soap opera , thanks to those meddling kids . The mechanics of time change of location is something that the writers of Heroes seem to have spend some prison term really thinking about , given the various ways in which they ’ve used it throughout the show . We ’ve seen people who can paint the hereafter ( Something that four separate multitude have done so far on the show , to varying degrees of success – although it ’s maybe worth note that only Isaac has a 100 % accuracy rate , perhaps because everyone was better at forward planning in the first season ) , we ’ve visited the future – well , futures – and we ’ve even visited the past a few times , as well . But that does n’t of necessity mean that the laws of time travel on the show are entirely consistent . fan mayargue about whether or not Hiro did change prison term when he tried to save Charlie , but the writers seemed to be fairly clear that the main events had stayed the same : Charlie still exit , Sylar still had her powers afterwards , and Hiro decided that he could n’t change history ( Even though he really already had , by that full point ) . But then , how do you explain the show ’s multiple futures ? By our count , Heroes has had somewhere between four and six dissimilar “ future ” that we ’ve actually seen for ourselves – the oracular painters ’ visions do n’t matter , because people with no irises scare us – and most of those have been undo by the character changing that futurity ’s story base on precognition of what was to come :
futurity 1 : New York gets burn out up in a nuclear blowup because of Sylar one year in the future , as seen when Hiro saw when he first hear his powers in “ Do n’t appear Back , ” the show ’s 2d episode ( The cause of the explosion is uncover in “ Five twelvemonth Gone , ” later in the time of year ) . Undone because : Peter saved the cheerleader , but did n’t relieve the human race . Of course , what caused him to economise the cheerleader ? Hiro time - traveling and telling him to do it .
Future 2 : New York gets bodge up in a nuclear explosion because of Peter one yr in the future tense , as a result of Peter saving the cheerleader because Hiro told him to . tough move , Peter . Everyone has gone risky as a result – well , except for Ando , who become flat in the explosion : Hiro has become a ninja , Nathan has become President and Ali Larter has become a ecdysiast because the writers care to imagine her naked . We saw all of this in “ Five old age Gone ” in the first season . undo because : Nathan flew Peter into the “ high - enough - that - a - atomic - explosion - is - apparently - nonmeaningful - sphere ” at the destruction of the first time of year . It ’s unreadable why this did n’t happen in the Five Years Gone timeline , other than the promise of chintzy dramatic event , so this may not have changed as a direct result of clock time locomotion ( although Hiro ’s time - traveling prank probably helped , let ’s present it ) . maybe not unwrap because : See Future 4a . No , really .

Future 3 : 93 % of humanity has died as a result of the Shanti Virus , which was a plot machine if ever there was one . We see this in “ Out of Time , ” during the 2nd season of the show that we all attempt to block ever survive as completely as Peter has blank out Caitlin , his Irish girl that he by chance abandoned there . Oops . Undone because : The virus did n’t get released after all at the end of “ Powerless , ” the last episode of the second season , thanks to Peter have it away what would bump if it did , thanks to time change of location . So what come about to Caitlin ? No - one have it away , not even the writer , who ’ve complained that their heads spin out when they judge and work it out . Future 3b : This future tense definitely does n’t subsist but in some unusual fan - fable somewhere , but as in the beginning shot , the Shanti Virus did get released at the end of “ Powerless , ” and the never - completed later episodes of that time of year would have included Peter ’s attempt to deliver Caitlin and a town quarantined because of the virus . Undone because : It never really take place in the first place .
Future 4a : Four year from now – although when “ now ” is seems to be a reasonably elastic conception ; I think it ’s actually somewhere around the last of 2007 at best , but “ four yr ” forward brings us to the same metre period as “ Five Years Gone”‘s Future 2 , which may be of import – future Claire tries to shoot next Peter , because she blames him for the way everything has turned out . It all happened at the start of “ The 2nd Coming ” from the third time of year . Potentially meaningful point : Both Claire and Peter depend on the button like they did in Future 2 , whether it ’s hair’s-breadth semblance or massive mark on face and stubble . Are the hair’s-breadth and make - up people that lazy , or is there some connexion between the apparently washed-up “ Five year Gone ” flashforward to this meter menses Undone because : Future Peter fool away present Nathan , thereby stop him from revealing the macrocosm of superhumans publicly , which was what cause all the problem , patently . Time locomotion saves the day again ! Except , maybe not . See below .
Future 4b : Hiro travel to some unspecified compass point in the future where he is fighting Ando , who now has superpowers – and he ’s not the only one – before there ’s a monolithic detonation that ’s very standardized to the McGuffin behind the first time of year . But Claire ’s not a cheerleader anymore ! How can they stop this one ? Again , from “ The 2d Coming . ” Undone because : Well , it ’s not , yet .

Future 4c : Again at some unspecified clip in the future tense , all of the veritable character on the show have been belt down by escaped baddie Knox , get by Alias thespian Adam Monroe , Matt ’s telepathic abstracted beginner , some Ali Larter character that may or may not be Tracy Strauss ( and really who cares that much anymore ? ) and potentially Sylar . This may or may not have been a true future – We saw it at the start of “ The Butterfly Effect ” in the third season , but it was Angela Petrelli ’s aspiration , and even though she ’s one of the show ’s many oracular characters , it was a dream . Undone because : We do n’t even know if it ’s substantial yet , never bear in mind how to undo it . The problem with these last three futures – besides the touch sensation that we ’ve seen them before ( perhaps literally , given the crossing between “ Five Years Gone ” and “ The 2d Coming ” ) – comes not from the show itself , but from aninterview with author Aron Coliete and Joe Pokaski , who said that not only was n’t future 4a deepen by Nathan ’s shot , but that “ [ t]hese are in fact , all the same future tense . ” hold back – did n’t we see Hiro get killed in two totally different ways in two of them ( zap by Ando and then stabbed by a brand , respectively ) ? How does that work ? Tomorrow ’s sequence of the show , “ I Am Become Death , ” promise to either handle some of this confusion or increase it , as FuturePeter and PresentPeter trip to a / the hereafter and , rent ’s face it , probably see Hiro die in yet another way just for shits and giggle just to mess with our head . So exactly how does fourth dimension travel body of work on Heroes ? After literally minute of consideration , the best we can work out – disregard the always present possible action of “ it does whatever the writers need it to at that moment , internal logic be damned ” – is this : you’re able to change the particular , but not the ultimate resultant , of fate ( or Peter Petrelli ’s unfortunate grazing chance event , it seems ) through time locomotion . Charlie will still break down ; she ’ll just have met Hiro six month in the beginning and been happier . There will always be a legend of Takezo Kensei , but he may cease up being Hiro instead of a refugee from a JJ Abrams spy play … and no matter how many cheerleaders you save or viruses you stop crashing against a burial vault floor , the time to come of Earth Heroes will always be dystopian , New York - centric and in need of the form of supporter that only comes from the Peacock web . If true – and it ’s something that make the similarities in Future Claire and Future Peter ’s appearance between “ Five twelvemonth Gone ” and “ The 2nd Coming ” – then it presents a pair of job for the writers of the show . Firstly , it suggest that we ’re probably going to continually have some level of time - traveling or change - the - succeeding plotline throughout the entire series , never take care the entire time of year , and second , it kills a lot of the spectacular tension if we find out that no matter what the characters do , we ’re still all going to terminate up entirely screwed by 2011 . Have the writer spell themselves into a corner , or will we end up seeing the rules of Heroes time change of location clearly explain in such a way as to allow for a non - gloomy future sooner rather that after ? Only sentence , ironically , will tell . Just lease me be intimate if I stop up having to be get my Shanti innoculation .
