For his new novelThe Severed Streets , the 2nd instalment of his Shadow Police series , herald writer Paul Cornell decide to include author Neil Gaiman as a significant reference . In this essay , Cornell share why and how he went about making his fictional Gaiman .
I ’d just been in a brain on railroad car crash , which my married woman and I had miraculously survived , but now I was back at my desk . It was the other minute of the forenoon , and , having been discharged from Accident and Emergency , we ’d just spent an 60 minutes getting up the stairs to our front door . Dawn was relegate , and I felt bloody prosperous to be alive , and I wanted to station some electronic mail , recount hoi polloi . ‘ Who is this ? ’ I asked .
‘ Neil , ’ it said .

The Severed Streets is the second in my Shadow Police series of novels ( though if you do n’t bear in mind spoilers , it lend you up to escort with the first volume so tight it can stand alone ) . These are book about a little chemical group of advanced London law officers and their intelligence analyst who make headway The Sight , the power to see the monster and obscure magic of their city , and find that the only agency to save themselves is to expend genuine police methods and tactics against the repugnance . ‘ Of course . Of course . Myself , I got it when I touched a pot of soil . But of course it ’s not … always that . Is it ? ’ Arrgh . Why could n’t he just utter normally to this bloke ?
The man pause , as if wonder whether or not he should resolve , then live on ahead , perchance intend this was the quick way out of the conversation . ‘ Someone handed me an target at a signing . They enunciate they hoped it would give me “ divine guidance ” . It gave me a headache , and a lot of unspeakable visions on the elbow room to the airport . And , as it turned out , every metre I visited London . So the inspiration it gave me was mostly to go live in the country . ’
‘ And you got to the Goat - ? ’

If Neil ’s part in the Holy Scripture were limit to that cameo , then I do n’t imagine I ’d be peculiarly majestic of it . Having once been someone who revelled in in - jokes , I ’ve now become rather allergic to them . ( put a reference to one movie in another so we geeks can blot it : not in reality rum , therefore not actually a gag . ) But Neil appear several time more , and , as I hope becomes obvious , is middling much inherent to the theme and structure of the novel . I wish to cerebrate that , though these are supernatural thrillers that sprint along , they ’re also quite serious books , with a bit of desirableness to them , and , not want to give anything away , Neil ’s role is part of that .
Neil read through all the handing over he ’s in ( do n’t obtain him responsible for any he ’s not ) , and gave us his benediction .
