To date , geneticists have identified plenty of genetical markers that are correlated with intelligence . Taken individually , however , these calculate for a paltry 1 % of the magnetic declination in IQ scores . But now , an international team of scientist has identified a lot of gene that seem to amplify each other ’s effects — resulting in a synergetic hike in intelligence .
The determination could transfer our sense of how intelligence work in the brain – and how it might be improved . But the study has its critics .
In the past times , scientists have name some 20 genetical mark that seem to be linked to intelligence agency . But none of those genetical marker have turn out to be a “ magic bullet train ” for brainpower — at most , any one of those 20 marker tends to have very subtle effects .

Writing in Science Now , Moheb Costandidescribeshow brain doctor Paul Thompson of the University of California devise a new prominent - shell strategy for take on this problem . To this end , he co - founded the ENIGMA mesh in 2009 – - an outside pool of researcher who flux brain scanning , transmitted data , and standardized IQ tests to study brain structure and function .
Theirfirst breakthroughcame in the beginning this year when they identified genetic variants link up with drumhead sizing and the volume of the genus Hippocampus ( a brain structure crucial for learnedness and memory ) . The researchers discovered that one of the variant was creditworthy for a boost of 1.29 points on intelligence quotient tests for those carrying it - – a departure they consider was meaning .
Costandi explains how the field was done :

The researchers have now used the same scheme to identify more transmitted variants consort with brain social structure and IQ . In the new written report , they analyzed brain image and whole - genome datum from 472 Australians , including 85 couple of identical twins , 100 pairs of nonidentical twins , and their nontwin siblings . They identified 24 genetic pas seul within six different gene , all of which were associate to dispute in the structural wholeness of major mental capacity pathway . “ We measured the insulation of the nervous pathway , ” says Thompson . “ This pretend how profligate nervous impulses are route around the Einstein . If the pathways are insulate poorly , the psyche functions less expeditiously and is less tolerant to disease . ”
Interestingly , many of the factor were already known , but had n’t previously been linked to brain integrity .
Moreover , the researchers found that some of the variants were associated with intelligence agency — and that those carry these mutation were doing several points well on intelligence quotient psychometric test . What ’s interesting is that the variants come along to amplify each other ’s effect , so that possess more than one provides a boost in intelligence . According to Thompson , “ We ascertain a whole range of genetic version that affect the shock of other variant and we are beginning to understand the channelize principles of these gene networks . ”

But as Costandi bank note , not everyone is purchase into the study .
Geneticist Silvia Paracchini feel that the researcher were looking at oversimplified statistics , and that their sample size was too small-scale .
Further , epidemiologist Sarah Medland sound off that there was no replication done in the report , and that other appropriate information sets should have been used . She also contends that it ’s rare to see both IQ grade and brainiac imagery information used for such a study , and that the data is probably not comparable .

disregardless , Thompson ’s approach suggests that there ’s still much to see about how genetical factors recreate and feed off each other . It ’s good to evoke that there is no such thing as an “ tidings cistron ” . What ’s more probable is a confluence of genetic factors , the particular of which still need to be understood .
