The Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles were created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird . But it turns out that the rootage of the narration about the four mutate - turtles , who assume the name of Renaissance - era artists and father masks to fight law-breaking , could go much further back than that .

You know what has always bothered me about the Turtles ? ( I mean , among the great many things that beleaguer me about everything )
Why do they wear masks ? Are they afraid someone might make out them ?
Officer : Do you think you could describe them ?
Citizen : Uh , they kinda look like turtleneck , you know ? Round racing shell . Bald . Kinda fleeceable . Spots . No real nose .
ship’s officer : Could you pick them out of a batting order ?
Citizen : I doubt it . They were bust masks .

They were created as a parody of Frank Miller ’s ninja characters from the former eighties , so they wore the trappings of “ funny book ninjas . ” Now it ’s just part of the facial expression . Originally , the mask were all inglorious , but they added color for the cartoon . Even the belated comic strip had them all be crimson masquerade .

Okay — the real floor — late one night I did this draftsmanship of a Turtle , masquerade and weapons in spot , baffle for battle ( below)—all to make Pete laugh . . . Anyway , so Pete and I quetch around this idea of a crowd of “ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ” ( stolen from “ Cerebus , ” “ Ronin , ” “ New Mutants , ” and “ Daredevil ” ) wrote a narration to tell apart how they came to be , ( all on our very own ! ) and decide to sell it through the direct market Phil Seuling make , borrow a crew of money from my uncle , and see what happen .
