Silicon is great . Our computers would n’t function without it . But it ’s nearing the limit of what it can achieve — which is where molybdenite , the new Kyd on the chip , can take over to offer smaller , more effective processors .
The problem with atomic number 14 is that it ’s not potential to utilise layers less than two nanometers fatheaded in chips . If you do , the atomic number 14 can oxidize and the electronic belongings of the material crumble into a useless lump of , well , silicon dioxide .
But there ’s a unexampled chip material in townsfolk , and it lead by the name of molybdenum disulphide . A clean abundant , by nature occurring mineral , its structure and semi‐conducting properties mean it can compete directly with silicon . It can even givegraphene — perhaps the world ’s most exciting textile — a foot race for its money .
But what makes it exciting in cow chip terms is that it can be form in layer only three atom thick-skulled . Unlike silicon , at these scales it is still unchanging . That means it should be potential to make chips that are at least three times smaller than the current standard .
A team of investigator from theLaboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures(LANES ) have go so far as actually making a image molybdenite buffalo chip . Andras Kis , director of LANES , say :
“ We have build an initial paradigm , putting from two to six serial transistors in place , and shown that basic binary system of logic mathematical process were potential , which proves that we can make a great chip . ”
Because molybdenite can be used in much smaller quantities on fleck than silicon , it means that we can expect smaller , more efficient central processing unit made from the clobber .
I have n’t mentioned the best part yet , though : molybdenite also has mechanical place that intend that it ’s flexile . Not flexible , various . No : flexible , bendable .
