Last night ’s episode of Falling Skies was way better than the melodramatic “ Hal ’s got an eyebug ” showdown the previous week , although it still was n’t a landmark in television chronicle or anything . In peculiar , last dark ’s episode gave us what we ’ve wanted from this show for years : some development of the radical of government and the individual .

If you ’re going to have a post - apocalyptic show about survivor try on to carry on — and especially if you ’re going to have a show like that set in a huge community like Charleston — you dead have to tell story about government activity and what sort of organisation these people are fighting to reconstruct .

So yay for Falling Skies telling more account about unlike people mould different societal contract . Last night , we had :

1 ) The principal plot , in which the Mason clan meet another family , who are sort of their foils but also represent Rugged Individualism charter to its extreme . The Pickett gang live on a farm in the middle of nowhere , and until now they ’ve mostly stayed off the aliens ’ radiolocation . But since they took in some unscrupulous subsister of the alien attack who tried to rob them and killed Mrs. Pickett , Wilson and the remainder of the Picketts do n’t trust any outsider and live by rob travlers . ( Note : I do n’t fuck if Mr. Pickett ’s name is Wilson . That ’s just the coolest name he could peradventure have . ) When Tom tells them about Charleston , the fabled “ Shangri - La ” where everybody looks after each other and they crusade the aliens , Wilson wo n’t listen and his intransigence wind up up fetch his blood brother shot . In the end , Tom manages to win over the Picketts that if they kill the Masons , they ’ll have lose their humanity — as if humanity call for a certain amount of charge for fellow human beings .

2 ) Miss Peralta decides to move Popetown to make room for more refugee settlements , and possibly pass a source of dissent as well . Pope fights back , stirring up civic unrest , and Dan Weaver seems displume between keep going his novel boss and digest by Pope ’s right to do what he want , within reason . Weaver actually quote Tom Mason as saying that the residential district needs a riotous component like Pope , who will do the unacceptable thing sometimes , and he also believes that the working people need a bar to blow off steam at . And this whole storyline kick off with Pope discussing the “ credits ” he and his crew have earned from betray John Barleycorn , notice that they ’re fundamentally useless outside of Charleston — they ’re a convenient fiction , like all of Charleston ’s government . And then the literal real , legitimate President of the United States turns up , and Miss Peralta is briefly relegate until the POTUS predictably gets spud by the Mole . And around that same meter , Dan Weaver decides that something uncollectible is pass to go down with the Volm , the humans ’ foreign allies , and he require Pope in his corner .

( Oh , and Pope has a really interesting scene with Maggie , where the show actually remember that his mob basically raped and gaol her for months — and he tell her that she ’ll come crawling back to him when the prick hits the buff . )

3 ) The Volm finally explicate about their superweapon , and it adds up to a whole wad of “ confide us , we know what we ’re doing . ” In a nutshell , the Eshveni defense storage-battery grid will have the side effect of enlighten the intact major planet and toss off all the humans and other constitutional biography , except the “ fishheads ” and their harnessed workers . ( Which makes you wonder twice as hard why they ’d chafe coming here , and why they would n’t just nuke us from celestial orbit in the first place . I reckon they wanted harnessed slaves . ) But the Volm superweapon will destroy the grid by overloading it — or else it ’ll supercharge it and cook the planet quicker . One or the other .

All that , plus we last find out who the Mole is — it ’s Lourdes ! Kind of pitiful about this , since she ’s in reality come a long room and become a style more likable character than she was in the first time of year . But the scene of her kneel in front of a cross and a million wax light with bugs fawn out of her heart was kind of great . But really , why one Mole ? Why not 100 ? Why not half the universe of Charleston ? Are those bug expensive or something ?

Anyway , this was not a perfect time of day of television by any agency , but it did require some interesting questions about society and the somebody , and those are the sort of questions I ’d make out to see this show ask more often .
