Because Shan Fong , the hero sandwich know as Doctor Miragein Valiant ’s comics , can interact with ghosts , she ’s knownmore than her fair share of dead multitude . The dead have been a constant presence in Shan ’s life for as long as she can remember , but all of that is set to change . Check out io9 ’s exclusive prevue of Doctor Mirage # 1 and feel out more about the new serial from author Magdalene Visaggio and artist Nick Robles , and colorist Jordie Bellaire .
Though Shan ’s face all fashion of supernatural being in her adventures with her departed husband Hwen , there was no way she could have ever been prepared for the recent and sudden loss of her link to the Deadside , the root of her ability . The implications of Shan ’s loss are almost too large to put into words because for her , not being able to see the utter way having to grapple with true decisiveness in a fashion she ’s never had to before . Shan ’s willing to pour out all of her magical energy into whatever it takes to put things back the way they were . But what she does n’t take in as Doctor Mirage ’s first issue open up , is that the latest challenge she ’s facing is endlessly deeper and more complicated than any one spell , no matter how powerful , could ever fix .
When I spoke with Visaggio about where Shan ’s at , emotionally speaking , as the new serial publication start out , she excuse that Heron ’s closed herself off from the outdoor world in lodge to make out with the desolation . As unhealthy as it might initially seem , though , it ’s the origin of a newfangled , crucial part of Shan ’s life :

Her brokenheartedness right now is disaffirmation . For the first clip in her life she ’s absolutely , uncontrollably alone . She ’s been trying to school herself in the magical arts to work out out a mode to do what she ’s done before because she think that rap back into the Deadside will make her problem go away . She thinks that she can get Hwen back , but she does n’t really see quite yet is that one of the biggest things stand in her way right now is her own injury .
We know that Hwen was a sorcerer when he and Shan were working together , but because they were a squad , she never really had to learn the technical aspects of deception . Her armor ’s the perfect doctrine of analogy because it ’s got all of these talisman and hexes and charms all over it to protect her , but that ’s all hooey Hwen did , and now that she ’s there by herself , she ’s get to face these challenge on her own . That gives her the chance to finally and go out to explore these things for herself , and for me , the playfulness is in finding thing with her .
