io9 : How did The Fire Never Goes Out come about ?

Noelle Stevenson : Over the last about seven or eight years , I ’ve been describe comics just as they come to me . About thing in my life history , my feelings . For me , they ’re just agency of exploring my own feelings and my own sense of self . I really just did them for me . But over those eld , I ’ve really created a lot of these personal comics , and it ’s become a custom every year that I would mix them together into a minuscule retrospective … I had seven or eight years of these , and my amazing editor at HarperCollins last year reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in publish these as a collected comic memoir . So that ’s what this is .

io9 : Do these personal comics tell an overarching narrative about your life , or are they more pelt - of - consciousness ?

Stevenson : All of these are sort of drawn in the moment , from the metre I was 19 age previous . [ They ’re ] in - the - moment manifestation on my internal living . My life history change … growing up … I think the narrative becomes sort of about those change . It start with , you know , sort of being out in the public for the first fourth dimension , being on my own . And these comics became the upright manner I could express that . I had n’t figured out yet who I was and who I was adjudicate to be , and the comics were a path of exploring that .

io9 : What story put up out to you among your compendium and why ?

Adlai Ewing Stevenson : There ’s one comedian that , I consider , it ’s one of the most raw funnies that I ’ve ever made , because it was this current - of - knowingness creation . It ’s a comic called “ Holy Ghost , ” and it ’s about the first time I ever walked out of Christian church . It begin something I end up doing a mickle in the future in personal comics , where it ’s all written in second - person — like I ’m spill to someone else alternatively of myself . Lets me get a chip of length .

It ’s this moment , when I was 17 or 18 , when I walk out of church for the first metre . I ride out into this park and went up on this hill and resist on this Alfred Hawthorne for an hr , looking for God and not find him . I create it the first Easter that I did n’t go to church service , because I was wrestle with the conflicted feelings of that , and that was the comic that resulted from that . It was pure . I was just draw , and not even trusted what I was doing with that .

I ’ve never been sure how to share it before , so I ’m glad it ’s found a house in this book . I think that was a big turn point for me , just creating the comic and realizing I could peach about these things , even if it was just in a mode that made sense to me .

Stevenson : When I made these comics , I was doing them so I would find less alone . I had always contend with telling people or demonstrate people how I really felt . Something was getting miss in communicating . I was sample to pass on out to other people and establish connections . The comic strip give me a language to do that that I had n’t had before .

io9 : You have so much going on , including Netflix ’s She - Ra and the Princesses of Power and all of itsside projects . How do you balance your workplace , your comics , and these larger projects ?

These funnies are … honestly , I treat them like therapy . I ’ve kept drawing them no matter how busy I got , because it ’s a well way to wind down and sort of drop a little time with myself . I did n’t make them with the expectation that they would be publish — that was something my editor brought to me .

make for — particularly on She - Ra — puzzle out on these property that are so project intensive requires so much of yourself . You take off to lose jot with yourself as a person , and your own consistency and your own thinker . So these comics became about a way for me to protrude establishing that I was still this mortal , that I still have this animation and I still had this dead body . It was something I was doing , even when matter were the most feverish , just to keep myself somewhat grounded .

A lot of them are pretty secondly - long doodles I did on a Post - It sitting at my desk in the middle of a really feverish schedule . Just this moment I would steal for myself to write down what I was feel and give myself that moment to take my own feelings and my own inner life into write up .
