Eternals might be the first Marvel Studios movie that does n’t benefit from being a Marvel Studios moving-picture show . After over adecade of interconnected pic , the company has carefully craft audience expectations . To us , a Marvel movie has a certain undeniable energy ; a blend ofaction , humor , and heart that ’s aimedto please everyone from geezerhood eight to 80 . Eternals has some of that , of track , but in the hands of recentOscar - gain movie maker Chloé Zhao , it also aim to be more , and being beholden to the rules of Marvel holds it back .

Zhao , whowon the Best Director Oscarearlier this year for Nomadland , also co - wrote Eternals along with Patrick Burleigh , Ryan Firpo , and Kaz Firpo . The basic story is that at the beginning of time , God - similar creatures named Celestials createdimmortal beings call Eternalswhose caper was to protect the universe of discourse from another circle of beings call Deviants . The motion picture pick up when the Eternals first arrived on Earth 7,000 yr ago , and follows them through story , culminating in a cataclysmal event happening in present Clarence Day . That sound like a lot of story , and it is , specially when you earn the film also has to follow 10 of these Eternals in addition to side character .

The plot is design to fit all of that in though , and at least at the beginning , it works . Things start , and for the most part lodge , with Sersi , play by Gemma Chan . Chan antecedently appeared in a modest part inCaptain Marvel , but here she usher humanity and personal magnetism that prove she ’s much better suited for the foreground . When she ’s reunite with her long - fall back love Ikaris ( Game of Thrones ’ Richard Madden , not to be confused with Sersi ’s present - twenty-four hours love , Dane , play by Game of Thrones ’ Kit Harrington ) , the two recognize the Deviants they thought they ’d exterminated on Earth centuries ago are back . And so the two , along with Sprite ( The Lodge ’s Lia McHugh ) , get across the globe pose the Eternals back together to battle the returning menace .

In its “ getting the gang back together ” scenes , Eternals feels like the Marvel moving-picture show it aspires to be . These10 immortal beingsare a family , after all — they just happen to have known each other for millennia . Over that monolithic duo of time , deep - seated , complex human relationship have developed ; the moving picture is eager to explore them , but only has a little metre to do so . We check about Sersi and Ikaris ’s romance , for one . Ajax ( Salma Hayek ) , the loss leader of the group , has gone off to a farm in South Dakota . Druig ( Dunkirk ’s Barry Keoghan ) long ago grew asunder from the ideals of his fellow Eternals . Thena ( Angelina Jolie ) has developed an affliction that requires her to be look out over by Gilgamesh ( geartrain to Busan’sDon Lee ) . Kingo ( Silicon Valley ’s Kumail Nanjiani ) has become a generational Bollywood movie star . Phastos ( Atlanta’sBrian Tyree Henry ) detached from the grouping after a tragic realization . Sprite faces unreturned sexual love . And Makkari ( The Walking Dead’sLauren Ridloff ) is just ready to allow for Earth .

Of course , since this is a superhero movie , all of the Eternals have a different great power — some of which are cooler and more helpful than others — but seeing all of them interact , reunite , and reminisce is when Eternals is at its good . The character are well - defined and each actor does a fine task distinguishing themselves , while also having that spark of knowledge that they ’re in a Marvel movie . Because a diverse group of actors was roll , it also makes them feel like true , worthy representatives of the world and the hand allows each character reference to have distinguishable , dense points of view . We hear conversations about kin , religion , war , technology , evolution , and more , ensue in a cornucopia of interesting ideas for the hearing to chew upon .

watch all that unfold , there ’s a strong sense those musical theme are what Zhao want to explore with this photographic film . What does it mean to have existed on Earth and see the entirety of history ? How would all of these divers point of view brook that ? It ’s a fascinating conceitedness and one that , if Eternals did n’t have to become a Marvel picture , really might have been interesting — but they have to take metre to addresswhy they did n’t fight Thanosand they have to mention the Avengers . So as Eternals goes from a generational geographic expedition of time and space to a zero , pow , wham Marvel picture , all of those musical theme and possible action get pushed into the background . Once we teach why the Deviants are back , the Eternals are forced into action , and though there are a few solid construction and turns in the final act , the movie more or less devolves into superheroes in suits inject material in rules of order to save the world .

That ’s all all right and smashing but Eternals was crafted as , and looks more like , a history interested in explore the flaws of humanity rather than who would win in the big - budget special effects fight . So every time those VFX sequence recoil in , they experience somehow less than ones we ’ve previously check in the MCU . The characters have been doing this for so long , and audience have been watching characters like them do these things for so long , very little in these portions feels Modern or unequalled . Heck , even the villains expect familiar ( though not from Marvel , more like theWheelers from Return to Ozand even Steppenwolf fromJustice League ) . None of these things are treated as afterthoughts in the plot , they ’re just not as rousing or exciting as one would expect them to be because it ’s a Marvel motion-picture show first , Chloé Zhao picture second .

Eternals is most entertaining and exciting when the hero are in dissimilar time periods , interact with different cultures and environments . Zhao and her cinematographer Ben Davis shoot the hell out of every lush landscape painting , from heroic deserts to deep jungles to snow - covered mountain . Plus , the redaction , which bounce from the nowadays to unlike dot in account , feed Eternals a decent impulse despite its near three - hour run time .

It ’s just that by the destruction of the journey , all of the case , all of the history , all of the idea and exposition only make up some of the film . On top of all that , it has to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and be an exciting action movie . Eternals find like a balloon that attempt to hold it all together but was filled to bursting ; it ’s too much — and not enough . The termination is a very challenging , very well made , kind of flat , and unfortunately forgettable motion-picture show . And with the level of talent that made it , that ’s a big disappointment . But hey , at least the conclusion and goal credit scenes are coolheaded .
