The Descent was one of our best-loved revulsion flick of late years , so we were automatically excited about director Neil Marshall ’s new picture show , Doomsday . And that was before we found out Doomsday was blend to be Mad to the Max . In Doomsday , the government fence off Scotland to contain a pernicious pestilence … only to post a squad into the shatter state 30 years later . We talk to Marshall about solid women , genre confusion , and why Doomsday has no teras .

The Descent and Doomsday both focus on women venturing into perilous billet . Do you think it ’s of import that the heroes in your films are women ? Do you spell cleaning lady characters differently , or are they just heroes who take place to be women ?

It ’s certainly not some form of career architectural plan to have my heroes be woman , it ’s just turned out that means . I actually wrote the story for Doomsday several years before I made The Descent . It was one of 3 scripts I hear to get made in the wake of The Descent and it was the one that Rogue Pictures choose to back , so it ’s really just a conjunction that my unexampled Italian sandwich is also a woman and I saw no reason to change the character into a man just because of what I ’d done previously .

I attempt to write women as authentically as potential . Above all thing , no matter how knotty and furrowed I make the characters , they should never misplace their femininity .

I love to flux musical style . Taking the well elements from different inspiration and project them all into the mix is what make believe it fun . Besides , I remember the lines between genres have often been blurred at best , and that ’s no forged thing .

Most post - apocalyptic movies nowadays feature monsters ( 28 day , I Am Legend , etc . ) Are you consciously trying to reclaim post - revelatory motion-picture show from the fiend - movie genre ?

perfectly ! It ’s like there ’s an unverbalised rule in motion picture now that computer virus = zombie ! Well that ’s not what post - apocalyptic film are about for me . It should be about human survival , because the mean solar day the next fully grown global pandemic arrives , there wo n’t be any zombi execute around , I can promise you that . This is tangible , terrorise stuff , just as actual as atomic war was when the last great post revelatory picture show ( like The Road Warrior ) came out . And that ’s the sort of gamey , savage world I ’m attempt to revisit with this motion picture .
