Miriam Black has returned , along with her unpleasant clairvoyant power to see the meter and fashion of last of any person she touches . She ’s trying to root into a normal life sentence , but when she discovers a group of daughter will be brutally murdered by a serial killer , she ca n’t continue on the sidelines .
Mockingbird is Chuck Wendig ’s continuation to Blackbirds , whichI antecedently reviewed . Blackbirds was about fate versus free will ( warn , if you ’ve not record Blackbirds yet , spoilers are ahead ) , and whether or not Miriam could switch the atrocious futures she saw for her few friend . When she attempts to interpose on behalf of Louis the trucker , who is perhaps her only acquaintance in the world , she learns that she can change destiny , but at a cost . For each liveliness she economize , destiny demands one in regaining .

Unwilling to juggle such weighty decisions , the source of Mockingbird chance Miriam working in a grocery store and living a quiet lifespan with Louis , who is gone much of the fourth dimension . This can only last so long , though , and not because of Miriam ’s superpower , but because she ’s not really the settling down case . Or the “ working a regular job ” character . Or the “ be polite to customers ” type . She needs to corroborate herself somehow , but does n’t need to bring back to her morbid past tense .
Louis propose a solution . A ally of his wants to know how she dies . She ’ll pay Miriam for that cognition . This wreathe the mainspring of the plot , because the friend , a woman named Katey , works at a secret school for troubled girl . When Miriam unexpectedly comes into contact with some of the girl , she sees that they ’ll be tortured and horrifically murdered by a military man in a creepy-crawly boo mask .
The issues Miriam struggles with in the course of the novel are what make Mockingbird more than just The Further Adventures of Miriam Black . She knows she can remold the future , but now she has to settle if she wants to , and to what end . When she ’s faced with someone else ’s take on that same question , Miriam has to seriously oppugn her place in the tapestry of fate . give way the ability to fiddle God , does she have the right hand to ? Can she trust herself to make the right decision ?
Of naturally , as that patch mainspring unwinds , it turns a lot of pocket-sized gear . Miriam ’s relationship with Louis and his unswerving dedication to her are test , by which I think of she can be a existent meanspirited bitch to him . Those mysteries will have to look for another novel .
Wendig ’s distinctive style remains impregnable – the tempo borders on manic , the voice somewhat breathless and frantic . Miriam is as sarcastic and vulgar as ever , a girl who is always on the make because she knows no other way . Here she is spar with Homer , the private schoolhouse ’s logic gate - sentry duty :
“ Hell no . You messed up . You ’re on the list . ” He leans out of his John Wilkes Booth and lowers his vocalism . “ And between you and me , it ai n’t a good lean . ”

“ Fine . ”
“ So why do n’t you hand it up through the logic gate now . ”
She wince . “ Yeah . I do n’t in reality have fifty dollars . ”
All those plot cogwheel do not change by reversal in a completely straightforward direction . What is likely a unsubdivided “ find the serial grampus ” tale at first delves down a few unreasoning back street before unraveling in a flaky and stunning way . And even when the story does move in a linear way , it ’s highly entertaining . Miriam ’s detective method acting is to first become bust up with ego - doubtfulness , endanger to give up and go home , then ascertain a beginning of information and commit felony ravishment to produce said entropy .
I cerebrate I liked ouzel better than Mockingbird , but in some style this feel like a transitional novel . Miriam , and the lector , and Chuck Wendig , are explore the boundaries of her abilities and scouting out the path she ’ll take . It ’s not a unbent or pleasant path , but it ’s interesting . I ’m once again left looking forward to reading more about Miriam . I doubt she ’ll ever be the kind of character citizenry cosplay at conventions , but she sticks in your brain all the same .
