Welcome back to Jewels of Apator , Ann & Jeff VanderMeer ’s column about the intersection of art and the fantastic . Aaron Jasinski is a great example of the next coevals of Lord , slipping easily from song writing and production , admit plot workplace for node let in Microsoft and Oberon , to graphics and illustration . In this new era of cross - pollination more and more of the divisions between dissimilar character of media , and even dissimilar type of influences , are falling away . Whether it ’s work for shows like “ lose in Space ” or his wonderful “ Starcatcher ” painting , created for a show at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome Italy , his SF art has a kind of sorcerous retro finger . It ’s the future brought forwards from the 1950s , but without a Jetsons vibe - which might just entail that Jasinski purchase into the idea of playfulness more than some .
Jasinski tell us :
I grew up in a musical family . Music tend to be a born and easy field for me to include in my visual creative person . Beyond field of study matter , I think music influences my nontextual matter in how I endeavor to express the colour , regular recurrence , and figure in some of my paintings . medicine is the most nonfigurative art form , yet most of it is so easily approachable and emotion - relevant to us humankind . I ’d like to capture that in rouge .
Technology and fantasy can be the same thing in Jasinski ’s work , the confluence utter his unique sense of humor :
I love technology and contrivance . I do a lot of music using my computers and other electronic devices . I intend this interest does filter into my art but in a kind of jejune way . I seek to employ the innovative world or even the ‘ future ’ as a source of puns … and humor in showcase you do n’t obtain [ the ] puns very funny .
“ Rise Above Your Station , ” in which Angel Falls acquit an spaceman above a crime syndicate of either hearten or grave golem , provides a skillful example of Jasinski ’s approaching . It has a capricious aspect , and it makes you laugh , but it ’s also a somewhat unsettling , unusual trope . In terminal figure of SF influences of the literary kind , Jasinski ’s are fairly conservative :
I would have to Isaac Asimov is probably my favorite scientific discipline fiction novelist . I peculiarly care his “ Robot ’ novels and how he expend a science fiction background knowledge to explore a spate of interesting philosophic ideas about freedom , choice , and what it means to be human .. But for SF artistic production , “ It could only be Syd Mead . That guy is a mastermind from another mankind . I wish I could drag like him .
As for what separates SF from Fantasy , Jasinski says , tongue firmly in impertinence :
Science Fiction is geeky . Fantasy is nerdy . I think I am a chip more geek than nerd …
In his other life as a player , Jasinski is a member of the Remix Artist Collective ( RAC ) , who “ make re - interpretive careen / electronica / dancing remixes for melodious artists ” in a way known for its emotion and merriment . The RAC has done remixes for bands like The Shins , robber on High Street , Block Party , and Tokyo Police Club . None of the four members of RAC , including Jasinski , have ever met each other - another polarity of the changing dynamic in the originative world .
