Middleville , the scope for Megan Rose Gedris ’ webcomicMeaty Yogurt , is an ordinary town , except for one thing : it ’s under a curse . Anyone who is support there is destined to die there , after a life story of long second-rater . At least that ’s what Jackie Monroe thinks , but she ’s set to beat the curse and do something extraordinary .
When Marilyn “ Jackie ” Monroe was six age old , her ( kind of racist ) uncle separate her about Middleville ’s curse . Even as a quasi - grownup , Jackie is inclined to think him . After all , her roommate Saffron study style design , but is dead contented with her life as a waitress . And all the people she finds genuinely interesting are from out - of - town , especially Saffron ’s rock music ace girl , Moira .
Jackie is dictated to break the curse , but while she has plenty of ideas and muscularity , follow - through is not her strong suit . Every week , she has some new plan for achieving greatness — starting a punk striation , becoming an actress , study photography — and each hebdomad she abandons it . In fact , the only thing she sticks to are her close friend , including her farsighted - term boyfriend Tom .
It ’s not light if the Middleville curse is real or just an inauspicious piece of crime syndicate traditional knowledge . But there is something very weird — something not of this Earth — happening at the edges of Meaty Yogurt , something that Jackie is too quick to wave away . After all , nothing that exciting could ever go on in her living , proper ? It may well be that Jackie only thinks she ’s go in a slice - of - life mirthful ( with its series of delicious anticlimax ) when she ’s living in something else altogether .
Whether you ’ll enjoy Meaty Yogurt depends a great deal on whether you enjoy Jackie . ( Note , that ’s “ enjoy ” and not “ like . ” ) She ’s a character who wear her wart on her arm — she ’s brash , she ’s lack perseverance , and her ft jolly much lives in her rima oris . But she ’s also abound with life . She ’s invariably trying new thing . She ’s ferociously protective of her friends . And she ’ll say just about anything to get what she require . She is extra ; she just may not be special in the way she wants to be .
We may not always root for Jackie to come through , but we do always root for her to be interesting . She may well break down in Middleville , but that curse may not be such a dreadful thing .
