I ’m one of the Mars One astronaut campaigner vie for a slot on a one - style colonization mission . For me the attractive feature is multiple : doing something no one has done before ; advancing scientific cognition ; examination and improving engineering science that can improve life back on Earth ; and taking the first steps toward make Humans a multi - planet species . ( And we wo n’t be doing that alone : in the tenacious tally we ’ll want to transfer and save as many other Terran metal money as potential . )
I definitely understand why off - planet colonization holds minuscule appeal for most people ( especially at first ) . The living conditions will be exceptionally constrain , the diet will be trammel , and the issue of people for companionship will be small . But there is no [ economical ] means around that . Any colony will have to start small so as to establish the viability of the place as habitable .
Of of course , while undoubtedly exciting , it ’s all still very theoretic . While Mars One has say thatthey plan to be ready to have a human settlementup on Mars by 2024 , it ’s indecipherable when — or , indeed , if — they ’ll have the technological and economic resourcefulness to carry through that goal .
